Youth Athletic Training for Northern Virginia

The Preparation Fitness Development Teams are designed for serious middle school athletes looking to improve their skill development, basketball IQ, confidence, and competitive habits through structured practices, competitive gameplay, and accountability.

This program focuses on long term development and preparation for the next level.

Fall Development Season (August–October)

The development team program is divided by grade into two team options. 

5th Grade
Development Team

The 5th Grade Development Team is designed to help athletes build confidence, improve basketball IQ, and strengthen the foundational skills necessary to compete at a higher level.

This program focuses on development through structure, accountability, and competitive gameplay while preparing athletes for advanced middle school basketball.

  • Small Sided Games & Live Play
  • Decision Making Training
  • Tournament Play (once a month)
  • Monthly Player Feedback & Evaluations
  • Confidence & Leadership Development

August–October

  • Structured Team Practices
  • Competitive Tournament Schedule
  • Development Focused Environment

Players must attend at least 1 practice per week in order to participate in tournament play.

6th/7th Grade
Development Team

The 6th/7th Grade Development Team is built for athletes looking to improve their confidence, consistency, basketball IQ, and competitive performance before entering advanced middle school and high school level competition.

This program places a strong emphasis on pace, reads, decision making, and applying skills under pressure.

  • Advanced Skill Development
  • Basketball IQ Training
  • Competitive Live Play
  • Pace & Reads Training
  • Defensive Development
  • Competitive Tournament Play (Two tournaments/month)
  • Monthly Player Feedback & Evaluations

August–October

  • Structured Team Practices
  • Competitive Tournament Schedule
  • High Accountability Environment

The 6th/7th Grade Development Team will compete against older competition throughout the season to push athletes outside their comfort zone and accelerate long term development.

Players must attend at least 1 practice per week in order to participate in tournament play.

Player Placement

Preparation Fitness may place athletes on teams based on:

  • Skill Level
  • Basketball IQ

  • Physical Maturity
  • Coachability
  • Developmental Readiness


Our goal is to place athletes in environments where they will be challenged appropriately and continue developing long term.

Preparation Fitness reserves the right to move athletes between levels when necessary to support player development.
